2013 marks the year of André Le Nôtre, the talented architect and Louis XIV’s gardener
The park open on to the Grande Perspective, lined with 400 marble and bronze statues, numbers of fountains. The gardens are a beautiful maze of greenery, creating an amazing experience.
Le Nôtre was a genius. Louis XIV commissioned André Le Nôtre in 1661 (Roi des jardiniers et jardinier du Roi = King of gardener and gardener of the King). Unfortunately, his papers have disappeared, and his gardens have suffered numerous modifications. He also played a part in the creation of the Trianon. Le Nôtre is said to have received commissions for the Vatican gardens and several Roman dwellings. he did participate, by sending plans and collaborators, in the remodeling of the gardens of Hampton Court, Greenwich and Windsor.
In the beginning of his career as gardener he worked on the upkeep of the Tuileries and of the gardens of the Luxembourg, the Palais Royal and Fontainebleau.
At Le Nôtre’s death, the Mercure Galant of September 1700 commented his disappearance in the following laudatory terms:
